Scooter Lives Life in the Carpool Lane!

Hi friends!

By now you know that when I have places to go, I try to get there without having to ride in a car. Of course, sometimes you just don’t have a choice. When I do have to go somewhere in a car, there is this awesome thing I do called “carpooling.” Now, I know what you’re thinking, and no, that doesn’t mean I ride in the car to the local pool! Carpooling is when a group of people (or animals!) get into just one car to go somewhere, instead of driving a bunch of cars to the same place. For example, if you and your friends all have soccer practice after school, you can carpool to practice by having one of your friends’ parents pick up all of your teammates from school and take you to practice. By all going to practice in one car instead of separate cars, you are helping to reduce air pollution:

Scooter’s DIY Ice Cream Shoppe

Hi friends!

July is National Ice Cream Month! One of my favorite things to do in the summertime is make homemade ice cream! Check out my favorite recipe -- it is both delicious and, because you can make it at home, it helps reduce air pollution since you don’t have to drive to an ice cream shop.

With just a few ingredients and a little jiggle, you can make homemade ice cream in minutes and help Spare The Air!

What you’ll need:

  • 1 1/2 cups half and half
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 cup rock salt
  • 3 cups ice
  • 1 gallon-size zip-top bag
  • 1 pint-size zip-top bag
  • Dish towel

What you do:

  1. Start by filling the gallon-size zip-top bag with half the ice. Sprinkle half the rock salt over the ice and then place the pint-size zip-top bag inside.
  2. Now carefully measure and pour the half and half into the small pint-size bag along with the vanilla and sugar. Make sure the top is tightly sealed, kids!
  3. Place the rest of the ice around the cream-filled baggie and then sprinkle with the rest of the rock salt. Zip the top, wrap in the dish towel so your hands don’t get cold, and get ready to shake.
  4. Check the bag after two to three minutes of good shaking. Creamy ice cream should be inside!
  5. Remove the ice cream from the bag of salted ice and enjoy — right out of the bag!

Spare The Air Season Starts

Spare The Air Season is here!

Hi friends,

Spare The Air season is here!

Spare The Air teaches us how to improve our air quality and reduce dangerous ground-level ozone pollution, also known as smog. In the Earth’s lower atmosphere, near ground level, ozone is formed when pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries, chemical plants, and other sources react chemically in the presence of sunlight. Ozone at ground level is a harmful air pollutant. For you and your parents, driving less will help Spare The Air during the summer months and reduce smog.
